Block 3 Week 2 of Porridge & Play Castlemilk
Wednesday 27th July
Such an inspiring and playful session this week! We started off with a funky Dance Warm Up and showed Andre all our cool moves and then we played The Funky Chicken,
Arwa showed us how the Weird Dolphin spins round and round!
Freya did the Crazy Koala who likes to side-cuddle her Mum!
Avery showed us the Dancing Zebra!
This week we found out about all the fabulous games the Castlemilk mums played when they were kids. Sayeda taught us a great game that she’d played in Pakistan with her friends. She said we needed to draw a circle with chalk and all of us had to stay in it with one leader protecting everyone, while outside the circle, another player had to try to catch us all. If you are caught, you have to come out and help the ones outside the circle catch those inside it, until no-one is left inside the circle – this was great fun and there was a lot of dodging and laughing!
Melissa showed us ‘Sticks’, which she played in the back garden between the tenements and it was a bit like the long jump. She told us – ‘we have 3 sticks, a space of 3 feet in between. And what you do then is you have to jump in between the spaces and make a long jump on the last one and it just carries on until you get to the end of the yard. And whoever can’t get into the space between the sticks is out.’ This game can go on for hours, which is great, because we all loved it!
Amira showed us her version of Hopscotch which had a clever twist. Amira said she liked to play in front of her house in Egypt with her friends and sister too. To start the game, we needed something to throw and chose a cheeky red lobster soft toy and if it landed, say on number 5, we had to hop and jump, but miss out the number 5 without falling over. This was so much fun that we even played it after our picnic food while some of the grownups were still chatting!
Anita did some skipping with us all which she loved to play in the compound in Nigeria with her friends.
Yang had us running around in delight playing the Chicken Game and 123 Wooden Man. So much joy in the room!
If that wasn’t exciting enough, we still had Martha’s Kick Ball where we all stood in a line at one end of the room and Martha was at the other side and then Abu demonstrated kicking the ball to her and everyone had to run to Martha. The object of the game was to run fast and get across the line before she caught the ball. Martha said she felt happy playing this game when she was young and so did we at Castlemilk! Lots of smiling faces. We enjoyed it so much, we can’t wait to try these games again soon!

What is happening in block 3 for Porridge & Play Castlemilk?
After such exciting trips out we are venturing back to our hub this July and August and will be coming together to create our new AllScot Playcards!
These Playcards will already be like the existing Licketyspit ones, but will be created with the games you play and played as children, and new ones we make up together! You’ll be able to see them – and play them – at our Storyplay Festival on Saturday 17th September!
