Block 3 Week 1 of Porridge & Play Castlemilk
Wednesday 20th July
What a lovely afternoon we had for our first session back at Porridge & Play Castlemilk!!
Arwa and Hadir are experts in play and showed us by making themselves as BIG as a BEAR!!! We think we could have some future actor pedagogues!
We had a lovely session with some wonderful families and we found out all about each of them! Amira told us how hot it was in Egypt and that she had studied Chemistry at University in Cairo and enjoys cooking a traditional dish called Dolma which has cabbage and rice and lots of herbs. And as a family they love to sing. She said,
“We like to go out together as a family, picnics and sing together. It is great to be us because we love to be together.”
Arwa and Hadir have a cat, Nala, that they love too!
Funky Chicken Fact: Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Arab world.
Emma is studying for a Masters Degree in Sustainable Development and Jared & Levi also told us all about their two cats, Fred and Lucy. We even got to stroke them and feed them after landing in their house, still holding our flying balloons! They like to go to the caravan for their holidays and also camping. Jared said he had a big burger! Emma said,
“Our family is from Castlemilk in Glasgow, we like to have some pizza, we like to say, love you, we like comfy PJs on our jammie days, we like to celebrate birthdays! We like to go to the caravan together and it is great to be us, because we are all very different and that makes us perfect.”
Ife loves to wear a traditional type of dress that wraps around and she and her children love doing things as a family together. Ife said,
“We like to celebrate births and naming ceremonies. We like to play ‘who is in the garden’ it is a fun game and based on a play! It is great to be us because we are a great family!”
Fiire took us to her Rainbow House in our Flying Balloons where everything was like a rainbow. She said,
“This is the rainbow house, where we went on the flying balloons. So this is the Rainbow House and it always has a rainbow shining behind it. It has a bathroom, a living room and a cloakroom with a kitchen as well and it has an invisible room with lots of bouncy houses! And it has a white room which is also a gym. This is the rainbow garden and it has lots of grass and flowers. I like to play double double! It’s a concentration game.”
Funky Chicken Fact: The world’s longest-lasting (or longest-observed) rainbow was located high in the mountains of Taipei, Taiwan in 2017 – it lasted for 8 hours and 58 minutes
A rainbow is often a sign of hope, the beauty after the storm, a pot of gold and good fortune at the rainbow’s end. For a lot of people, a rainbow carries a personal symbolic meaning–representing inclusivity and diversity, an all-embracing image of love and friendship! That is exactly what we do at Porridge & Play! We include everyone, respect everyone and learn from each other. All of us can be rainbows! We can extend friendship to others, respect everyone and bring hope and joy and we know you bring all of this to us.
Pemi also drew some fantastic and very colourful pictures of the Flying Balloons and the Rainbow House. We all had plenty of yummy food to eat and as a special treat in the heat, we had ice-cream which everybody enjoyed and came back for seconds! At the end, we still managed to do The Magic Clap, ice-creams and all!
What will we discover next week?

What is happening in block 3 for Porridge & Play Castlemilk?
After such exciting trips out we are venturing back to our hub this July and August and will be coming together to create our new AllScot Playcards!
These Playcards will already be like the existing Licketyspit ones, but will be created with the games you play and played as children, and new ones we make up together! You’ll be able to see them – and play them – at our Storyplay Festival on Saturday 17th September!
