Big Porridge & Play Ruchill Week 4

2022-07-14T09:26:51+00:00

18th May 2019 We are missing next week’s session not taking place because of the Bank Holiday so we wanted to make sure we had an excellent session of Porridge & Play today - and we did! –Jack, Iona and our General Manager, Shona were here for our 4th Ruchill BIG Porridge & Play 2019! We started the session with our infamous Big as a Bear - everyone was in the mood to play and full of Licketyspit spirit! We were SO SAD to hear about Old Roger! We wept and we wailed! So we planted an apple tree over his head! The apples grew ripe and tumbled down so the lucky Old Woman could pop them in her basket. Cheek! She was delighted BUT just as she was about to nip off home with them….Old Roger jumped up and he gave her a SHOCK! Eeek! That made the Old Woman go Hippety Hop! We loved playing In the Way of the Word! One group decides on a ‘doing’ word and the other group plans different things to ask them to act! - taking a shower and playing football gigglingly was hilarious! So was brushing our teeth and eating our dinner sadly! Both groups performed brilliantly and we guessed all the words! This is a great game to play at home – especially with grown-ups who don’t usually play! [...]

Big Porridge & Play Ruchill Week 5

2022-07-14T09:27:03+00:00

1st June 2019 We had a really wonderful Picnic & Play on The Tall Ship with the Ruchill Porridge & Play group last week. Ruby met some of the group to get the bus to Partick after a quick game of Big as a Bear and Funky Chicken at the bus stop. When we got there, we met the rest of the group, as well as Jack, Rita, Boatemaa and Emmanuel, who had been getting things ship shape and ready to go, and we had an incredibly imaginative, energetic and joyful session. We had some very confident Funky Chicken contributions - like the Puppy Dog, the Tall Snake and the Slow Snail. Everyone was really listening to each other and showing a lot of mutual respect and appreciation. We also played Sent a Letter to my Love, with lots of smiling and skipping about. Then suddenly, the Letter turned into a Magic Ball... Our Tall Ship Magic Ball Adventure - The Nasty Pirate and the Sea Creature We climbed inside the Magic Ball and found some dressing up clothes to create our adventure costumes, then we said the magic words and the Magic Ball took us off - to an Arctic Island! You were unstoppable and brimming with ideas. Several people bravely jumped into the icy sea and invited us all to have a swim. Then we [...]

Big Porridge & Play Gorbals Week 5

2022-07-13T15:57:25+00:00

30th May 2019 Travelling from the St Francis Centre in several taxi’s, we all managed to avoid the wind and the rain arriving at the wonderful and exciting Dream Machine on the London Road! As we warmed up and danced like Funky Chicken’s we could tell we were in for a great session and we were not disappointed! There was a special birthday in the group this week so we all decided to bake a cake! There were lots of exciting ingredients - delicious melted chocolate, fresh strawberries and grapes as well as some more unusual and odd ingredients added like…. a pair of shoes, a beautiful pink dress and even a door! We all helped pour the mixture into a baking tin, open the oven door and pop in the cake to bake! With a loud beeeep! The cake was ready! We all decorated it and sang Happy Birthday to Alan! who turned 4! (Then we tasted the cake! Yumm!) After we had finished eating our cake we had some story time! Jack read a brilliant story called Cockatoos by Quentin Blake. This is the story of Professor Dupont and his wondering and hilarious Cockatoos who get fed up of the Professors morning routine one day and decide to run away! I wonder if we can all remember where the Cockatoos were hiding?! The story of the cockatoos [...]

Big Porridge & Play Whiteinch Week 5

2022-07-13T16:02:22+00:00

29th May 2019 With the rain tumbling down and the wind blowing, we couldn't have our planned Picnic & Play in Victoria park, but we stayed and had a brilliant session in the Library instead, with a dressing up parade, another Balloon adventure and lots of songs. Jack read us a Letter to his Love - his lovely love that he loves, loves, loves! On his way to send the letter, he dropped it, only to find that someone else had picked it up and put it in their pocket. But who was it...? This game was greatly enjoyed by all, with as much fun being had by those who didn't have the letter as those who did! We also created our own story in this session. As you know, every Porridge & Play game can be like a trampoline bounce into making up characters and stories, whether it's Grandma with her creeping forest of Monster Trees, Mr Wolf and his various watches and different activities every hour, Flying Balloons high over Glasgow together or Magic Ball. These games all fill our heads with ideas, stories and adventures where we can be anyone, go anywhere and do anything - and we do! All we need to play is each other! This week we thought we'd have a go at making up a completely new story, starting with a character and getting ideas from across the circle to tell the tale of Kitty the Clown and the Naughty Seagull. Click here to read the story! After our dressing [...]

Big Porridge & Play Gorbals Week 4

2022-07-13T16:03:29+00:00

23rd May 2019 This week the BIG Porridge & Play Gorbals families set off from the St Francis Centre through the Gorbals and over the Suspension Bridge to play on Glasgow Green. We had a brilliant session! The Funky Chicken arrived with lots of funny animals - like the cheeky dog, the roaring t-rex, the angry cheetah, the happy lion and the cheeky spider and we had a great time dancing, singing and roaring as we walked along the road together like a big family. When we got to the park we wept and wailed over poor Old Roger. We planted some apple trees over his head - but when the apples grew ripe and all tumbled down a cheeky old woman came along and popped all the apples into her basket! She was very pleased with herself until suddenly…Old Roger hopped up from his grave large as life and gave her a SHOCK! Which made the old woman go Hippety Hop! We all think this story-song is hilarious! Everyone wanted a go at being Old Roger (and the Mums were scared!) We played a huge game of Witches Fingers with some scary parent witches cackling away! The witches had a terrible time trying to catch us though because we had the whole of Glasgow Green to run away to! We had wonderful Monster Trees which crept slowly up [...]

Big Porridge & Play Whiteinch Week 4

2022-07-13T16:02:30+00:00

22nd May 2019 Licketyspit travelled from the Whiteinch Library to The Tall Ship at Riverside for a brilliant outreach Picnic & Play session! We began our journey with delighting fellow bus travellers with an excellent rendition of Jelly on His Head! We wanted to share the Lickety songbook with the rest of Glasgow! Once we boarded the Tall Ship, the group met our friends Old Rodger and the Old Woman! We planted apple trees, watched them tumble down and collected them in our baskets! Old Rodger gave us a big fright which made us all go Hippity Hop! We then went on an adventure on the Magic Ship travelling to a beautiful and exotic Island! We first did some exploring - finding crabs, beautiful sea shells and a wild unicorn! We then found a tiny cave which we all bravely crawled into and we were rewarded with an amazing white sandy beach with warm turquoise water. We all went for a swim meeting along the way a mermaid! This was a very hungry mermaid who loved eating cake and lots of it! As we swam back to shore two sharks gave us a terrible fright! Luckily, they were very friendly and all they wanted to do was play with us! What an incredible journey we went on today! The Tall Ship, also known as the Glenlee, is one of [...]

Big Porridge & Play Gorbals Week 3

2022-07-13T15:57:43+00:00

16th May 2019 Our third session of BIG Porridge & Play Glasgow at the St Francis Centre in the Gorbals was very enjoyable indeed! Jack and Ruby were joined by Iona, our Lickety volunteer Saliha and 35 participants as we played, sang and ate together on Thursday afternoon. We flew high above the St Francis Centre and high above Glasgow, travelling around the world holding on to our multi-coloured balloons! We saw four polar bears in the North Pole, we met a beautiful purple octopus and we just missed our balloons being popped as we ducked in and out of some aeroplanes at a busy Airport! We also saw 22 people, so small they looked like ants, playing football and luckily, we were just in time to see one team score! Gooooaaaaaallllllll! We had some great dressing up on show which made the game of What’s the Time Mr Wolf all the more fabulous! We had some very energetic animals in the woods and we need to remember for the next session just how scary the wolves are! We don’t want to get too near otherwise we might get eaten! Ahhhh! Love was also in the air throughout this session! We heard a romantic letter to a love but tragically it kept getting dropped onto the floor. Thankfully there was always someone there to pick it up! There was [...]

Big Porridge & Play Whiteinch Week 3

2022-07-13T16:01:52+00:00

15th May 2019 Our third BIG Porridge & Play Glasgow at Whiteinch Library was brilliant – a great atmosphere and lots of great game playing! Jack and Ruby were joined by Iona and Asem, Lickety volunteer! We had over 40 participants attending the session as we all took shelter from a very hot and sunny Wednesday afternoon. We played lots of Lickety Playcard games including some new ones that we have never done before! We met the hardworking, never stopping Joe who works in a button factory and after meeting him we all felt like we had been working in the factory with him! We flew high above Whiteinch and high above Glasgow seeing all sorts of wonderful things! We saw a unicorn meeting up with her friend the dragon! A tower so high that it nearly reached us in our balloons and a flying dinosaur! What adventures we had! We also all baked a cake together - from stirring in our ingredients, adding some delicious PICKLES to opening the oven, to putting on our oven gloves to retrieve our baked cake. It was very very tasty! Don’t forget you can read all about the Licketyspit food on our website! We’re very excited to be heading out of the library and on to the Tall Ship at our next session! Other [...]

Big Porridge & Play Ruchill Week 3

2022-07-13T15:55:24+00:00

11th May 2019 Our 3rd BIG Porridge & Play Glasgow session in Ruchill was a really great one! We played some great games, sang new songs and ate delicious lentil and carrot soup. You can find more about our Lickety food in here! Ruby introduced us to her friend Joe this week. We found out just how busy he is and how hard he works in his Button Factory. By the end of the song, we all felt like we had been working in the factory too! To refresh ourselves after such hard work, we flew high above Ruchill and high above Glasgow, flying high in the sky in our different coloured balloons! The choosing of colours provided the group with lots to talk about after the session had finished, with one parent saying: "You have to think outside the box, it's good, they put you on the spot. I was gonna say Silver and then she said it so I wanted to mix it up so I just came out with blue!” We think both silver and blue are great choices! We travelled all over in our balloons, from waving to the lions in Edinburgh zoo to a near erupting volcano and a fleet of multi-coloured boats bobbing along the Clyde. We all got dressed up and went to meet some scary wolves deep in the forest. Our [...]

Big Porridge & Play Gorbals Week 2

2022-07-13T15:57:54+00:00

9th May 2019 We returned to the St Francis Community Centre for our second BIG Porridge and Play Glasgow session in the Gorbals where we visited the tropical forests of India, met people with some strange bed-time habits and were chased by a scary witch. With 13 families made up of new and returning members of the Children and Families Network, we had a fantastic session with all participating in our adventures. One parent exclaiming after the session, “they’re so happy!” Ruby and Hilde were joined by Jack and our new Lickety Volunteer Asem. We all enjoyed meeting the group again and playing and singing together! The Funky Chicken introduced us to some of his new friends, we met the fancy swan, the roaring tiger, the purring cat, the rainbow unicorn and the oinking pig! We also met some of Ruby’s friends! They all had one thing in common, some very very strange sleeping habits! One of her friends goes to sleep with a Jelly on His Head and another of her friends goes to sleep with Ice-Cream in her ears! We all wondered how they get to sleep at night! We travelled around the world for the first time leaving the St Francis Centre in our Magic Ball arriving in a very hot tropical forest in India! We trekked our way through the dark forest with torches and [...]
