Let the Wild Rumpus begin!
The Maryhill Families had a spectacular afternoon of adventures again this Tuesday at Woodside Library!
It was full of marvellous Wild Things!
This week was our first Woodside BOOKPLAY session, Kevan, the Librarian had given us a fabulous book – WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE by a man called Maurice Sendak.
First we listen to Steven reading to us. Where the Wild Things Are is a story about a boy called Max who is so mischevious that his Mum sends him to bed without any supper. But as he starts to fall asleep he notices that the walls of his bedroom are turning into a forest and when he looks further he sees a boat! So he gets into the boat and sails across the sea to where the WILD THINGS are!
We liked this book so much that we wondered if it was possible for us to jump into the story and to actually go to Where The Wild Things Are! So we all dressed up as wild things and practised our wild faces and our wild roaring! We suddenly realised there was a slight problem- how were we going to get there? It was something we had to have a wee think about.
As luck would have it, Jamal could see a boat! It was quite far away, but very handily Rayhan had a truck and knew a short-cut we could take! They knew how to start the truck and how to help it move with the special noise we all had to make. So our big noisy, cheerful group hurtled toward the boat. We were on our way!
When we got to the boat we had to get into it very carefully so it didn’t capsize!
It was hard work rowing all the way across the river to Where The Wild Things would be, but together we made it!
We had to push our way through long grass which smelled so sweet, then we found the Rainbow Bridge which was quite magnificent. It felt soft and light to walk on and had such vibrant colours! On the other side we found luscious green vines which we could to swing on to get over another patch of water. It was so much fun swinging on the vines that we all felt like we were really starting to become ‘Wild Things!’ Suddenly, we began to slip and slide, down, down, down until we landed! Plop! Into soft earth in the middle of somewhere that was very dark!
A CAVE! A Cave with a…. BEAR! A bear that was growling!
Luckily Brodie was very brave and knew how to speak Bear so he managed to find out that the bear was hungry! Rita and Maya had some bear food so they were the first to feed the bear. And then we all followed and patted the bear and we realised it was actually very friendly. The bear taught us to make the same strange and wonderful noises that he made and suddenly, we realised, this bear had magically turned US into WILD THINGS!!
As many of us were trying out our roars, and tickling our claws the Wildest of Wild things appeared and it was time… time for… a
WILD RUMPUS!!!
We Stomped & Homped & Romped & Flomped
Until we began to realise that Wild Things have a great sense of smell and we could all smell something good, so we followed our noses until we reached the foot of a beautiful mango tree. We stood there marvelling at the delicious fruits so high above us. We made some stairs and we used a rope and finally we jumped up high to reach the Mangoes! which we then chopped and ate hungrily. Those mangoes were the juiciest ever and so tasty.
But now, we were all really wishing for a hot dinner and for that we knew we needed to go back home.
It was so much fun being Wild Things we were sad to leave, but we realised that even though we had to go home now, we could come back into the story any time we wished. All we need to do is open the book and jump back into the story. Any time we want to. So we made our way back to Woodside Library, taking care to remember the route and what a wonderful smell we returned to! It was Steven’s hot carrot, tomato and lentil soup! Deeee-licious!
